According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, millions of Americans suffer from different types of allergies. Suffering from seasonal and other environmental allergies can disrupt your daily life and functioning. There are, however, ways you can lower your exposure to allergens. If you have allergies, there are different tools you should be aware of that can help prevent or control yours.
Weather Report
Listen or view the weather report so that you know what to expect. When the pollen count is going to be high, stay indoors as much as possible and close your windows. If you are on allergy medications, take them according to your doctor's instructions when the forecast is a high pollen count.
HEPA Filters
Keeping indoor air free from allergens is difficult. Vacuum carpets at least weekly with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter. You can also use an air purifier with a HEPA air filter in your bedroom. A HEPA filter is able to filter out small particulates which include allergens such as pollen and dust mites. Speaking of filters, you should be changing heating and air filters once a month so that the systems do not blow allergens into your air.
Mattress and Pillow Covers
Dust mites and allergens tend to stay on your pillow and mattress. There are mattress and pillow covers that are made especially to prevent the buildup of these allergens. They can reduce your exposure to allergens while you are sleeping. This will help you sleep better and wake up in the morning with fewer symptoms.
Dehumidifiers
During the warmer months when humidity is high, there is a higher chance of mold growth in places like the basement of your home. Use a dehumidifier and air conditioning to keep the air of your home dryer, lessening the chance of mold build-up. Cleaning the dehumidifier according to the manufacturer's instructions is also important.
Medications
There are different antihistamine medications and decongestants that can be found over the counter. If you have an existing medical condition, ask your doctor which ones are appropriate for you to take. Sometimes, when your allergies cannot be controlled with over-the-counter medications, you may need a prescription from your doctor for stronger antihistamines or steroids to help.
