1. Trial and Error

Just like anything else, sometimes the only way to compare the effectiveness of diet pills is to try them. Most diet pill companies give you a free trial period of their product before you have to buy a whole bottle. Some even give you a whole month's worth for the cost of shipping. Be sure to calculate the real cost of the product into your budget, especially if you plan on using the product for the long haul. Also, check the product's label before you take it. Don't take anything with a bunch of chemical additives, which most of the time are unnecessary, especially in a diet pill. Most just make the diet pill look pretty so you have a good feeling about taking it. Be sure to also check for food allergens, such as wheat, gluten and dairy products, in the ingredients list. Call the manufacturer and ask them about food allergens if they have not specifically stated it on the label.

2. Ask Your Doctor

Be sure to clear anything you take, especially diet pills, with your doctor. He might even recommend a more effective alternative, or he may ask you to try changing your lifestyle a bit. Go with a more whole foods diet for example. Try shopping the outside aisles of the grocery store instead of the middle, where they keep a majority of the processed foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats, like salmon, are great additions to make in your diet to help you along the weight loss path. He may also ask you to cut some things out, like that stop at the ice cream stand. Aside from the extra calories, it also has tons of food additives to make it even less appealing. Some naturopaths may even suggest blood allergy testing. This testing, although expensive, seems to be more accurate when testing for food allergies. You might even find once you cut the offending food out, you lose weight easily, without the help of diet pills.

3. Ephedra, or Not Ephedra

Recently ephedra has taken some heat for its link to the increased risk of heart related issues. Although some diet pill manufacturers have chosen to take it out of their formula, some have kept it in. A report from the FDA says that ephedra based diet products are more effective than a placebo in tests. If you have no heart disease in your family and want to take the risk, clear it with your doctor first and try the ephedra based products. Make sure the products are standardized, which means they were tested to determine how much of the active ingredient is in them, for instance, ephedrine is the active ingredient in ephedra, although it has other compounds as well. The companies that take the extra step of standardization often have a higher price on their products, but it is well worth the extra cost, since you know you are getting what you paid for.
