Health Benefits of Panax Ginseng

Panax ginseng is the Latin name for the herb commonly known as Asian, or Chinese, ginseng. The root of the ginseng is typically harvested after approximately six years. It is then dried and made into powders, capsules, liquid extracts or teas. Ginseng root contains a variety of compounds such as ginsenosides, panaxans and polysaccharides, which are thought to contribute to its many health benefits. Before using ginseng for any of these benefits, it is best to consult a physician, as ginseng can cause side effects and interfere with some medications.

Increase in Sexual Function

Numerous studies have been done on the use of panax ginseng for erectile dysfunction. According to the University of Michigan Health System, " a double-blind trial in Korea found that 1,800mg per day of Asian ginseng extract for three months helped improve libido and the ability to maintain an erection in men with erectile dysfunction. This finding was confirmed in another double-blind study, in which900 mg three times a day was given for eight weeks." Ginseng has traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac for thousands of years, and these studies appear to support its use in that area.

Increase in Fertility

Not only does panax ginseng improve sexual function in men, but it may also increase fertility. Both animal and human studies have shown an increase in sperm count as one of the benefits of using panax ginseng. A small study involving 46 men cited by the University of Maryland Medical Center showed an increase in sperm count as well as motility.

Immune Support

Another traditional use for panax ginseng is as an immune system stimulant. This use has been shown as effective in one study. Volunteers in this study took a ginseng supplement or a placebo for four weeks before receiving flu vaccines and, according to Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Center, "In this time, more volunteers taking the placebo developed a cold or the flu than did volunteers in the ginseng group."

Fatigue Resistance

Ginseng is classified as an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to all types of stress, whether it be physical, emotional or environmental. For this reason, panax ginseng may help to combat the fatigue that often accompanies these types of stress. According to the University of Michigan Health System, "One preliminary trial suggests it may help those in poor physical condition to tolerate exercise better." The University of Michigan Health System also states, "In combination with some vitamins and minerals, 80mg of ginseng per day was found to effectively reduce fatigue in a double-blind trial."

Other Benefits

Panax ginseng is often used to lower blood sugar, but studies have been mixed in this area. Anyone with diabetes should always consult a physician before taking this herb. Some research has also shown that panax ginseng may be beneficial in lowering cancer risk, but again, the results of these studies are unclear, and more research is needed.
