Clarins UV Plus is a moisturizer with UV (ultra-violet) sun ray protection. A popular addition to their skin care line, the moisturizer is designed to be a lightweight cream for daytime wear under makeup or alone. It is an anti-aging skin cream that blocks the aging effects of the sun.

Preservatives

Preservatives keep a formula from spoiling and lessen the growth of any bacteria, fungi or mold. Preservatives in Clarins UV Plus are methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben and phenoxyethanol. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative that does not release formaldehyde either and is added because it, like the parabens, is less irritating than some.

Fragrance

Fragrance is added to a mixture to enhance the appeal of the product to the consumer. Fragrances in this Clarins item include citronellol, geraniol, hexal cinnamal, benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, limonene, hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde (Lyral) and butylphenyl methylpropional. Benzyl benzoate is also a solvent that helps break down other items in the formula, and benzyl salicylate is an UV absorber, giving the product its sunscreen ability. Lyral was reported by the National Allergy Research Center's Department of Dermatology in June 2003 as causing allergies in 2 to 3 percent of the eczema patients that were tested. Limonene may cause contact dermatitis.

Thickeners

Thickeners will bulk up a product and keep it from being runny and thin. Some thickeners in this product include stearic acid, titanium dioxide and aluminum starch octenylsuccinate. Titanium dioxide also provides UVA (long-wave solar rays) and UVB (short-wave solar rays) protection without skin irritation. Aluminum starch octenylsuccinate also keeps chemicals in the product from caking up.

Surfactants

Surfactants keep a product gliding easily across the skin, making it easy to spread the formula. Surfactants in Clarins UV Plus include PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone, PEG-12 dimethicone and polyglyceryl-3 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone. Polyglyceryl-3 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone is also a skin conditioner.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants fight free radical damage, which occurs when oxygen is metabolized.
Antioxidants in this moisturizer in clued tocopheryl acetate and Camellia sinensis. Camellia sinensis is the species of plant whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce Chinese tea (color depending on when it is harvested) and tocopheryl acetate is vitamin E. Both work to give skin a healthier and more attractive appearance.

Humectants

Humectants help moisturize the skin by pulling water from the environment and trapping it in skin's layers. Humectants in this Clarins product are propylene glycol and alcohol. Alcohol can also have emollient, or cleansing, properties as well.

Miscellaneous

There are four other ingredients that have varying functions: Aluminum hydroxide is a skin protectant and can be a coloring or an absorbent. Cyclopentasiloxane is a silicone that gives "slip" to a product and makes it glide. Disodium EDTA binds to metal ions making them inactive to keep the product from deteriorating and turning rancid. Lastly, sodium chloride, or table salt, is a binder that keeps chemicals bound together.
