Systemic lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect numerous organs. Traditional medicine is necessary to control symptoms; however, the addition of holistic medicine can be beneficial. The American Holistic Medical Association states that a holistic approach helps a patient reach an optimum state of physical, emotional and mental health. Because of the complexity of lupus, a holistic approach should be used in conjunction with traditional medicine.

Acupuncture

The Lupus Foundation of America reports that acupuncture may help to provide some relief from the joint pain associated with lupus. According to The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in Asian countries to help prevent or relieve pain. Acupuncture involves the use of small needles to penetrate the skin at various points on the body to help stimulate energy flow, or "qi". Blocked or stagnant "qi" can perpetuate an imbalance in the body that is caused by chronic diseases such as lupus, resulting in additional joint pain.

Meditation

Meditation, which is a form of mind-body medicine, has been shown to have a positive effect on moods and quality of life, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Although stress does not cause lupus, living with stress or depression on a regular basis may hinder your ability to heal from chronic illness and intensify symptoms. Meditation may help you to relax, can reduce anxiety and possibly relieve pain. Meditation takes practice to master and is intended to help the mind reach clarity and a state of inner calmness.

Reiki

Reiki is described by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine as a practice that can help to facilitate your body's natural ability to heal. Reiki practitioners place their hands just slightly above or lightly on the body to increase the flow of energy. The process has been used to reduce stress, improve an overall sense of well-being, increase relaxation and reduce chronic pain. There is not yet conclusive scientific research about the healing benefits of reiki. To experience positive results from a reiki session, seek out a trained reiki practitioner.
