Thinspiration is a compound word created by linking together "thin" and "inspiration." Originally, the word thinspiration was mostly used by pro-ana and pro-mia groups, which are groups that promote anorexia and bulimia as a chosen way to live, not a disorder. Over the years, however, the word thinspiration has gained a wider appeal and is now also used to refer to methods used by people to help them achieve their weight-loss goals.
Step 1
Find pictures of skinny celebrities in magazines and cut them out. Place them around the house in areas where you're likely to see them often, such as the door of the fridge, a mirror in the bathroom or even next to your computer monitor. When you're tempted to overeat, glance at the pictures for inspiration.
Step 2
Visit "thin" sites, such as TheSkinnyWebsite, where you can find photos of celebrities' struggles with weight. Because these websites tend to cover both the ups and downs in weight, they can serve as a way to help you get through plateaus or difficult times.
Step 3
Join a thinspiration forum that doesn't promote eating disorders. Although many thinspiration websites do have members who are pro-ana or pro-mia, the vast majority of the members are there to lose weight, not to promote unhealthy behaviors. As long as you don't fall trap to the extremes, the interaction with others who are trying to lose a lot of weight can serve as inspiration.
Step 4
Use thinspiration websites for their pictures rather than their extreme suggestions. According to a 2006 study published in the journal Pediatrics, these websites don't seem to be as harmful as once thought. In fact, they seem to encourage girls with eating disorders to seek help.
