Excessive hair breakage can cause your hair to become too thin and actually break off. This can lead to hair loss and make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. There are numerous causes of hair breakage. The most common include improper grooming, overuse of heating appliances (heating rollers, heating iron, hair dryer), excessive sun exposure and poor diet. Damaged hair becomes very brittle, frizzy, dull and unmanageable. Fortunately, there are many ways you can repair hair breakage and prevent future hair damage.

Step 1

Purchase a hot-oil treatment kit and use it at home or undergo a hot-oil treatment at your local hair salon. Hot-oil hair treatments are designed to penetrate deep into your hair follicles, replace lost moisture and attempt to repair any damage to your hair. Make sure to follow the directions in the kit when applying to your hair.

Step 2

Take a vitamin B7 (biotin) supplement daily for one month to help internally repair damaged hair. Vitamin B7 can slowly strengthen and repair damaged hair while preventing new hair strands from breaking. Make sure to read and follow the dosage instructions. Vitamin B7 supplements are available at any drugstore or health-food store.

Step 3

Apply 1 to 2 tbsp. of coconut oil to your damaged hair. Coconut oil is high in proteins and includes compounds that can naturally moisturize and strengthen your hair. Massage the coconut oil into your hair after taking a shower and leave it on overnight, then wash the oil in the morning. Coconut oil will not stain your pillows or bedsheets. In addition, instead of using hairstyling products, use coconut oil to style your hair every day.

Step 4

Avoid using hair appliances that heat your hair. These include straightening irons, blow dryers and hot curlers. Applying high amounts of heat to damaged hair will cause it to become weak and fall off. Instead, let your hair air-dry or use an electric fan to prevent further damage to your hair.
