4 Ways to Teach Kundalini Yoga

1. Learn from a Master

Learning the ancient art of Kundalini takes much more than reading a book or watching an instructional video. Kundalini is a very powerful and effective ancient art of awakening energy centers in the body. Learning how to properly manipulate these subtle energy centers is something that should be learned from hands on experience by a knowledgeable Kundalini master. Yoga schools around the country offer various course offerings on Kundalini yoga. First learn the basic fundamentals of yoga instruction. Then learn how Kundalini energy is used in conjunction with yoga asanas to awaken these dormant energy centers carefully and responsibly.

2. A Philosophical Adventure

While obvious physical benefits to yoga practice are obvious, the philosophical foundations of yoga are just as important as the physical aspect. Learning the long history behind Kundalini and yoga disciplines will help you to build a strong foundation in order to pass on to your students. Kundalini works not only with the physical body but also the spiritual and emotional body to develop enlightenment and transcendence. Imparting the philosophical system behind Kundalini to your students should be done before beginning any real physical Kundalini awakening. Students need to fully understand the benefits and dangers associated with the practice and be informed of all possible reactions both physical and spiritual to such a practice.

3. Observing the Laws of Kundalini.

Various rules should be followed during Kundalini teaching to ensure proper instruction and prevent possible impurities from entering into your practice. Wearing a head covering during instruction is important because it prevents the 6th chakra from being too open. It stabilizes the cerebral centers so that you can remain centered and open to divine information. Opening and closing your Kundalini yoga practice with a prayer is also important and should be observed in all classes so as to pay homage to the divine centers that allow the Kundalini to be accessed. Stray away from making up your own warm ups, or encourage students to do their own warm ups before they come to class. Teach a short Kundalini Yoga kriya or pranayam series if you want to warm up your students but adhere to the guidelines carefully.

4. The Perfection of Sound

Kundalini yoga utilizes a series of sounds and physical movements to open the energy centers. Learning how to properly resonate these sounds in the throat is one of the mainstays of Kundalini practice. Becoming an effective Kundalini teacher requires diligent practice of the sounds of Kundalini in order to awaken dormant energy centers with the bodies chakra systems. Learning how to properly chant and how to teach your students to properly chant is vitally important to properly practicing Kundalini yoga. Breath control is also important and learning from a master how to control the breath and sound will be the most important aspect of Kundalini practice. Kundalini practice has a specific method of chanting and movement that should be adhered to maintain purity and proper integration.
