Locks are the best defense against stolen bicycles. Three common designs of bicycle locks are U-locks, chain-link locks and cable locks. U-locks are made of steel shackle and lock into a crossbar. Chain locks are made of specially designed links that resist prying and sawing. Cable locks are lightweight but less resistant to tampering. They have braided cables that are often coated with a tough sheath. According to Slate.com, there are three factors to consider when buying a lock: security, portability and value. For added protection, different types of locks can be used together, such as a cable lock and a U-lock.
The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U- Lock
Kryptonite has long been known for its staple U-lock designs for bicycles and motor sport vehicles. Its New York Fahgettaboudit lock is one of its strongest bicycle locks. Weighing 5 lb., it's lighter than many chain locks. It can mount on a frame for portability and comes with a $4,500 guarantee (not available in New York State) in the event of theft, as long as you can provide the broken lock. According to KryptoniteLock.com, this lock resists leveraging and bolt cutters and comes with three keys, one having a night light. The lock sells for about $90, as of April 2010.
The OnGuard Beast Chain Lock
The OnGuard Beast is about as burly as you can get for a bike chain lock. Made of a titanium re- enforced hexagonal steel chain, it locks with a kind of miniature U-lock and comes with five keys, one with a light. According to OnGuard.com, all of the parts have a protective coating, and the company offers anti-theft protection worth as much as $5,000. The 10-lb. chain is covered by a tough sheath that is water-resistant. The Beast is available in lengths from about 3 to 7 feet, with chain size about a half-inch thick. The cost is about $89, as of April 2010.
The OnGuard Rottweiler Cable Lock
Although cable locks are less secure than chains and U-locks, they are lightweight, convenient and still provide adequate protection when used in lower-theft areas by on-the-go commuters and cyclists. The OnGuard Rottweiler is a small lock made of twisted steel cable and covered in steel links wrapped in a hard plastic, which increases its security. It is less than 2.5 lb. and is approximately 3 feet long by 1 inch thick. The Rottweiler lock costs about $35, as of April 2010.
