Flu-like symptoms can be a positive sign if you are using ginger to detox your body. Ginger is most commonly used in baths to induce sweating, which helps to flush out toxins. The flu-like symptoms that occur after a ginger detox bath are a sign that the toxins are coming out of the body. A ginger bath isn't the only way to detox with ginger. According to a study published in the "International Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism," regular consumption of ginger can be beneficial in counteracting the effects of toxins that harm cells and cause mutations or tumors.
Step 1
Cut a 1-inch piece from your raw ginger root to make ginger tea at breakfast. Place the piece of ginger in a saucepan with 2 cups of water.
Step 2
Slice and squeeze your lemons until you have 4 tbsp. of juice, and add it to the saucepan. Bring the saucepan to a boil, and then reduce the heat to bring it to a simmer for 20 minutes.
Step 3
Strain the ginger and lemons from your tea. Add honey to taste. Mix a pinch of cayenne into your tea if you are comfortable with hot spices to increase sweating and detoxification.
Step 4
Steam a mixture of your favorite vegetables with ½ tsp. of ginger at lunch and dinner. Avoid adding any nightshade vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and eggplants, during a detox because of trace toxins in the vegetables that aren't beneficial during a cleansing.
Step 5
Season your vegetables with turmeric, mustard, garlic, onion or fenugreek, which according to an article published in the "Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition," has synergistic action with ginger in protecting the body.
Step 6
Boil 1 cup of brown rice in 1 ½ cups of water. Eat your vegetables over the brown rice during your detox.
Step 7
Start a ginger detox bath in the evening before going to bed. Grate your ginger with a cheese grater. Measure out 1/8 cup of raw grated ginger, and place it into your cotton bag. Pull the drawstring closed to secure the bag.
Step 8
Place the cotton bag with the ginger under the faucet in your bath tub, and turn on the tub. Test the temperature to find the warmest temperature that is comfortable to you. Mix 1 cup of Epsom salt into the bath water.
Step 9
Massage your skin with the brushes while you wait for the tub to fill to loosen dead skin and stimulate circulation. Rub the brush from your fingertips up your arm so that you are always moving the brush towards your heart. Continue to massage your other arm.
Step 10
Rub the brush around your stomach in a clockwise circular motion, and then upwards toward your heart. Continue to massage your chest, throat and face by rubbing the brush towards the heart. Massage each leg from the toes up to the top of your legs.
Step 11
Lay in your ginger bath until you begin to sweat after 15 minutes. Rub around your chest and stomach by using a clockwise circular motion. Get out of the bath after 20 minutes. Dry yourself off with a towel, and wrap the towel around yourself while you sleep.
Step 12
Take a shower the next day to remove any toxins from the surface of your skin that have come out through sweating during the night.
Tips and Warnings
- Refrain from wearing any moisturizers or creams that may inhibit the sweating process during your detox. Also, remove any nail polish from your fingernails. You can reduce the side effects caused by a ginger detox bath by taking a warm bath after your shower the next morning.
- Ginger can interfere with your bloods ability to clot when taken internally because it thins blood. Avoid using ginger internally if you are using blood thinning medications. Also, avoid taking ginger with aspirin. Excessive doses of ginger can cause diarrhea, mouth irritations, heartburn, belching and stomach upset. Avoid using more than 4 g or 2 tsp. of ginger in a day.
