According to the American Fertility Association (AFA), chances of getting pregnant significantly decline after the age of 40. Though the ideal age for conceiving is in a woman's 20s, the AFA says that 20 percent of woman in America are having their first child at the age of 35 thanks largely to improved medicinal knowledge and facilities. Thus, if you are reproductively healthy, in the right age range and are prepared for conception, you are likely physically prepared to get pregnant.

Discontinue Birth Control Measures

Different birth control measures have different readjustment periods. Thus, the time taken to become pregnant varies with the type of birth control measure you have adopted. The American Academy of Family Physicians states on its portal, FamilyDoctor.org, that women using the contraceptive Depo-Provera will not be able to conceive for at least for nine to 10 months after the last dose. Discontinuation of barrier control methods such as male or female condoms does not affect the capability to conceive, however.

Record Menstrual Cycle

Your ovaries release eggs in accordance with the signals received from your pituitary gland hormones. The timing is generally near your menstruation cycle's 14th day. This is when you are most fertile, with maximum probability of conception. If your menstrual cycle is of normal 28 days, the most fertile period is the 14th day. With long or irregular menstrual cycles, however, determining the fertile period becomes complicated. Ovulation predictor kits should be used in such cases to determine the fertility period. Charting basal body temperature or checking cervical mucus can also be used alternatively for determining your most fertile period.

Alter Your Lifestyle

Your lifestyle significantly impacts the chances of getting pregnant. Maintaining a balanced diet and normal weight is necessary. Increase intake of foods rich in folic acid and vitamins to enhance chances of getting pregnant. Stress and illness affect the timing of ovulation, thus avoid stressful situations which can impact your fertility. Ann Douglas, author of "The Unofficial Guide to Childcare" says in an article on Pregnancy.org that staying away from alcohol, cigarettes and certain over-the-counter and prescription drugs is also necessary.

Make Love Often

You will increase your chances of becoming pregnant if you have intercourse with your male partner often during your fertility period. Dr. Amos Grunebaum, director of obstetrics at the New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, states in an article on BabyMed.com that having sex at least once a day during your fertility period is essential to getting pregnant. Having sex in the missionary position is best since sperm can be deposited deep inside the vagina, near the back of neck of the womb, or cervix. It is also important that you lie down after having intercourse for at least five minutes so that sperm reaches the egg as easily as possible. Using the bathroom immediately after intercourse should be avoided.
