When uric acid crystals build up in or around a joint, painful inflammation can occur called gout, or arthritis. Injuries may also lead to arthritic pain. The associated pain can range from a mild ache to a debilitating condition. Homeopathic remedies are used by many people to alleviate the pain in the joints. Specific remedies are chosen by matching the indications of a remedy with the symptoms of an individual, sometimes along with psychological factors.

Arnica

This homeopathic remedy is often helpful in arthritis cases that come on as a result of injuries. The pain that responds to arnica is often sore, much like a bruise, and it may affect walking. If your joint pain makes you feel apprehensive at the thought of touch, this may be the best remedy for you. According to Dr. Ellen Feingold, author of "Homeopathy, Herbal Remedies, and Nutritional Supplements," arnica should be taken as soon as possible after an injury has occurred in order to aid the healing process.

Belladonna

When arthritis pain comes on suddenly accompanied by swelling and throbbing, belladonna may be indicated. Intense pain may suggest the use of this remedy. Joints may appear red and inflamed, with sharp pain that gets worse when the person is touched or jarred. If you are in need of this homeopathic remedy, you may feel restless or flushed.

Bryonia

When even the slightest movement causes a tearing pain, bryonia may be the homeopathic remedy needed. The joints may be swollen and hot with inflamed areas sensitive to the touch. Stiffening may occur in the knees along with swollen feet. The person in need of bryonia may be irritable and very protective of oneself, not wishing to be touched.

Calcarea Fluorica

This homeopathic remedy is especially beneficial in cases where the joints of the fingers have become enlarged. The knees and toes may also be adversely affected. The joints may sound as if they are cracking during movement, with a stabbing pain as a result. Changes in the weather can make symptoms worse. Warm applications may relieve discomfort.

Rhus Toxicodendron

According to Dr. Gary Null, author of "Complete Encyclopedia of Natural Healing," this remedy is often indicated when pain gets worse at night, and then again in the morning when one awakens. Cold, damp weather may also exacerbate symptoms. Warmth and motion may provide relief. The joints may be hot and painful, with stiffening and swelling when rhus tox is indicated.

Sulphur

For itchy, painful joints accompanied by a burning sensation, sulphur may provide relief. Other joints such as the feet and knees may also be affected. Any form of heat can increase discomfort, as well as damp weather.

Considerations

Homeopathic medicine is not evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Consult a physician for any condition that is persistent and troublesome.
