Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, most commonly affects the toenails, but can be present in fingernails as well. The symptoms of nail fungus include thickened, brittle nails, a space between the nail and nail bed and a dull appearance. You may feel pain or discomfort in your fingertips. Medications are available to treat nail fungus, but according to the Harvard Medical School, the treatment is lengthy and can cause severe liver damage. If you are suffering from fingernail fungus, you may be able to treat it with a home remedy using vinegar.
Step 1
Remove nail polish and artificial nails, if you have them on. These can act as breeding grounds for fingernail fungus, because they hold moisture and heat against the nail.
Step 2
Trim your nails short and straight across. Be sure to clean the nail clippers that you use well, and do not share them with others, as this can spread the infection.
Step 3
Mix one part vinegar with two parts water in a bowl. Soak your affected fingers for about 20 minutes.
Step 4
Rinse with clear water and dry your hands thoroughly.
Step 5
Repeat Steps 3 and 4 daily until the infection is cleared up. The Mayo Clinic recommends increasing the amount of water in the ratio or decreasing soaks to three times weekly if your skin becomes irritated from the vinegar.
Tips and Warnings
- Wear rubber gloves while washing dishes or performing other chores that will get your hands wet. This can help to prevent new fungus from forming.
- If you have diabetes or an impaired immune system, see your doctor right away if you suspect a nail fungal infection. In some cases, nail fungus can cause problems such as a serious bacterial infection or nerve damage.
