Enablex is tablet that is used to treat patients with an overactive bladder. According to Novartis, Enablex is packaged into an extended-release form to provide a once-a-day dosing. The main active ingredient in Enablex is the hydrobromide salt form of darifenacin, a muscarinic receptor antagonist. This means is that Enablex will compete with other chemicals in your body to prevent contractions of the urinary bladder muscles. Like all drugs, Enablex has side effects.
Digestive Side Effects
According to Novartis, digestive side effects are the most common types of side effects experienced by patients. These are dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea. According to clinical trials, dry mouth and constipation were the two most frequently experienced side effects. The rest of the side effects were experienced by fewer than 3 percent of test subjects.
Urogenital Side Effects
Novartis reports that urinary tract infection was found in 4.7 percent of patients studied. Urinary tract infection was the third most prominent side effect. This is most likely due to the fact that Enablex causes urinary retention.
Nervous System Side Effects
According to Novartis, the only nervous system side effect recorded was dizziness. This side effect affected less than one percent of the tested population. For the most part, muscarinic receptors affect involuntary muscles and have little effect on the brain itself.
Ocular Side Effects
Novartis reported that 1.5 percent of the tested population experienced dry eyes.
Other Side Effects
According to Novartis, 1.5 percent of patients experienced asthenia. Asthenia is the abnormal sensation of the body losing strength. Patients that suffer from asthenia feel weaker and are sometimes unable to move their bodies in order to perform basic bodily functions.
