For some, acne scars are nothing more than a few slight dents in the skin. For others, it can be a disfiguring problem that leaves them feeling insecure and self-conscious. Thankfully, there are ways to remove acne scars from small procedures to full-blown cosmetic treatments. In any case, you will need to be patient to see results from any of these methods, all of which require time to show full benefits, but you can experience improvement in your scars in as quickly as a week.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion can provide a solution for shallow acne scars and discoloration issues. It involves sanding off the top layer of skin using a rotating wire brush that's sometimes tipped with crystals. The skin is numbed, then the brush is run over your scars to remove the skin. This triggers your body's healing response, and although you're left with an open wound, it will heal smoother and with less of an indication of your scars. Common side effects include swelling, scabbing and a pink-tint to the skin for several months following the procedure.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels involve the use of an acid to remove the top layer of skin. Depending on the strength, a topical anesthetic may be used to make the procedure less painful. Glycolic acid is one of the milder formulations. Stronger peels include phenols and trichloroacetic acid (TCA). In any case, the peel is put on your skin, allowed to set for a few minutes, and then rinsed. Your skin may burn, tingle or sting during the procedure. You might look red or experience peeling skin for a few days after the procedure. Several sessions are needed to completely remove your scars, and even then, severe scars will not be entirely eliminated by this treatment.

Surgical Removal

Surgery can be used to remove acne scars, and is the fastest way to eliminate them completely. An entire scar can be surgically removed, and then the skin around it is stitched together to create a smoother surface. You might need a graft from another area on your body to achieve the best results and to fill in any gaps incurred from the scar tissue removal.
