Many women and even some men, struggle to get rid of under eye puffiness. This usually occurs first thing in the morning, but can last throughout the day, especially if someone is overtired. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common reasons for under eye puffiness are a loss of fat in the area, which occurs with aging and the accumulation of fluid under the skin around the eyes. In addition to the many creams and serums that claim to treat under eye puffiness, there are also techniques and treatments that can help solve the problem of under eye puffiness.
Changing Sleeping Habits
One of the easiest and least expensive ways to solve under eye puffiness is by changing the way a person sleeps. The Mayo Clinic states that getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night can help to eliminate under eye puffiness. Additionally, they explain that sleeping with a few pillows under your head so that your head is raised can prevent excess fluid from going to your under eye area while you sleep, so that the skin on your face will appear lighter and more firm.
Using Makeup
Using concealer and other types of makeup to camouflage dark parts of the skin is another excellent solution for under eye puffiness. Valerie Monroe, beauty director for Oprah Magazine explains that under eye concealer can reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness, making a person look healthier and more alert. Getting a concealer that is too light can actually emphasize how puffy the area is, according to Oprah's website, so it is best to use a concealer that works best with your skin tone. Once you pat concealer under your eyes, you can finish it up with foundation and a little bit of powder to keep it in place.
Cool Compress
Placing a cool compress or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in cloths directly on the eye area can reduce the swelling that leads to under eye puffiness, according to the Mayo Clinic. They state that it is best to use a cool compress while sitting up. Although this can be done any time of the day, it is most effective if done upon waking so that under eye puffiness doesn't last long.
Eyelid Surgery
When all else fails, eyelid surgery is an expensive, yet effective solution for under eye puffiness. The surgery, called blepharoplasty, involves a surgeon making an incision at the natural crease of the eye near the lower eyelid. Excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is tightened to eliminate puffiness.
