Mineral deposits find their way into your hair through hard water, chlorinated water, and hair styling products. Mixing with sebum and dead skin cells, mineral deposits coat the hair shaft causing your hair to look dull and weighed down. Before you consult a professional hair care specialist, try some simple home remedies to remove mineral deposits and restore body and shine to your hair.

Step 1

Mix 1/2 cup vinegar with 1/2 cup water to make a pre-shampoo rinse; vinegar breaks down mineral deposits and loosens them from the hair shaft. Apply the entire mixture to your hair and leave it on for five minutes. Rinse the mixture out of your hair using cool water. Shampoo as usual.

Step 2

Make a thick paste of equal parts baking soda and water. Add more water or baking soda as as necessary to achieve the desired consistency; the total amount you need will depend on the length and thickness of your hair. Apply the paste to your hair to loosen and dissolve mineral build-up. Work the paste into your hair and scalp. Leave in for five to 10 minutes. Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.

Step 3

Wash your hair with a chelating shampoo daily to remove and prevent mineral build-up in your hair.

Step 4

Visit your salon and ask for a crystal clarifying treatment--or purchase a crystal clarifying kit at your local beauty supply store for home use. These treatments break down harmful mineral build-up and restore a healthy pH balance to your hair.

Tips and Warnings

  • Find chelating shampoo at your local pharmacy--or use clarifying shampoo before your normal shampoo on a daily basis.
