Children can become bored very easily, so it is not always easy to keep them interested in being active. However, involving children in an activity that is fun and also effective in keeping them healthy can keep them interested. Not only are there activities available for several children to enjoy at one time, but there also are activities that a child can enjoy alone.
One-Person Activities
When a child is alone, have him practice his sport. For example, if it is basketball, count how many shots he can make. If it is tennis, hit a tennis ball against a wall. If soccer is the chosen sport, time how long the ball can be kept in the air with the feet, knees or head. Other one-person activities include playing hopscotch, doing jumping jacks, dancing and timing how fast he can run.
Two-Person Activities
When two people are involved, activities like ping-pong, tennis, badminton or a quick pick-up basketball game are options. If there is no net available for badminton, practice hitting the birdie to one another without dropping it. Other two-person activities include racing each other, jumping rope together, pitching and hitting, and riding bikes.
Group Activities
Playing team sports is an effective way to accommodate everyone involved. Several team sports include basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball and football. In addition, playing follow the leader while bike riding or skating is another option. Hide-and-seek, tag and dancing are other group activities as well.
Summer Activities
Since most children are out of school for the summer, days need to be filled with activities to keep them moving. For example, visiting the local swimming pool, attending the local recreation center, spending a day at the water park or playing with a hose or sprinkler in the backyard are exercise ideas. One water-related activity is tug of war. Place a sprinkler in the middle and use a rope or hose. Have the children try and pull each other back and forth over the water.
