1. Understanding the Kundalini.
Kundalini is dormant energy within the body that can be awakened through physical and spiritual practices. Awakening this energy is often a profound and meaningful experience, but should be done with care and proper instruction. Understanding the power of the Kundalini is integral to properly opening the energy centers and preventing emotional or physical distress. Through various physical exercises, visualization techniques, mantras and breathing exercises the energy centers located along the spine of the body are slowly awakened to significantly alter the spirit and mind. Taking a class on Kundalini yoga or Kundalini theory is the best way to learn about these energy centers. Individual study is important but should be supplemented with guided teaching.
2. Following the Progression.
Learning the exercises or (asanas) associated with Kundalini awakening is the first step in embarking on this powerful journey. Kundalini activation begins at the root of the spine and travels upward, slowly energizing each center as you progress along the length of the spine. Energy is seen as a coil in the body that lies along the length of the body.
"Kunda" means bowl or cave, and it refers to the fire of energetic consciousness lying dormant in the first chakra at the base of the spine. "Lini" refers to that which resides in that bowl or the energy within. The energy must be awakened in a linear upward motion to prevent imbalance and possible psychological or physical injury. Yoga asanas typically are associated with various mantras or vocalizations that resonate and awaken the energy centers according to the frequency and resonance of their vibrations.
3. Patience and compassion.
For some Kundalini is awakened almost immediately. One session of Kundalini yoga can dramatically effect your psychological and spiritual centers to create a long-term change in consciousness. However, for others the practice of Kundalini yoga is slower and more deliberate. Most yoga practice seek to integrate deliberate Kundalini awakening through a series of specific yoga asanas that ignite the dormant energy in the 7 energy centers (or chakras). Being patient and compassionate about your own awakening is extremely important. Stabilizing throughout the process requires patience and understanding of the subtle effects in the energy center. Without patience and understanding the surge of energy to the body and mind can be detrimental and result in psychological illness and physical complications.
