A sauna is generally a small room with stones that have been heated to high temperatures. When the stones have water poured over them, they create steam and cause the sauna to heat up. Saunas can typically be found in gyms, health clubs and day spas. Saunas have become very popular because of the many health benefits that they provide.
Relaxed Muscles
The heat from the stones will warm up tense muscles, causing them to relax. Having relaxed muscles will improve emotional and physical health, revive mental clarity and reduce stress levels.
Eliminated Toxins
A sauna will cause a person to perspire and allow the body to purge itself of impurities and toxins. The heat will cause the body core temperature to rise, which will assist in killing any parasites, virus, fungus or bacteria in the body.
Increased Blood Circulation
The heat allows the blood vessels to expand and increase the circulation of the blood flow. Increasing the blood flow through a sauna can mimic cardiovascular exercise and condition the body in the same way.
Improved Skin
The heat and steam will cause the pores of the skin to open up, allowing toxins and other impurities to become flushed from the body. The steam naturally moisturizes and hydrates the skin, making the sauna a great choice for those who have dry skin.
Strengthened Immune System
The heat and steam will open up the pores of the body and allow the toxins that could cause illnesses to sweat out. The International Steam Therapy Association notes that the high temperature inside of a sauna mimics a fever and sends a message to the immune system to increase the white blood cell count.
Enhanced Respiratory System
The sauna will prevent mucous membranes from drying out, open up the airways and discharging any mucous located in the lungs and throat, all of which will allow a person to breathe easier.
Risks
Although a sauna treatment has many benefits, there are risks as well. According to a Harvard Medical School study, during even a short visit to the sauna, the average person will lose one pint of sweat, which could lead to severe dehydration. A person can combat dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after using the sauna. Another risk is blood pressure. The heat can cause the skins capillaries to dilate, making the blood pressure drop.
