Many teen girls are weight conscious, and with good reason. A few extra pounds here and there may eventually lead to overweight. According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity in teens can put them at greater risk than average-weight teens for conditions like hypertension, diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemias. Teen girls often turn to trendy diets or those promising fast weight loss. Unfortunately, not all these diets are safe and healthy. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, a diet that promises fast weight loss should be considered a fad diet.
South Beach Diet
Many teen girls look to the South Beach Diet because it is relatively easy to follow and provides energy during their weight loss. The diet is split into three phases. The first helps you eliminate cravings; the second helps you maintain a healthy weight loss of 1 to 2 lb. per week. Phase three, more of a maintenance phase, helps you keep the weight off and recognize plateaus and temptations. According to its website, the South Beach Diet focuses on consuming fruits, vegetables and whole grains in combination with beans, lean proteins, nuts and low-fat dairy as the base for losing weight. Dieters are also encouraged to use Pilates in conjunction with low-impact aerobics. The South Beach Diet is convenient for teen girls because they can follow the online program and buy South Beach Diet foods at their grocery store.
Hollywood Diet
The Hollywood Diet is actually two different diets that are popular among teens because of claims they will lead to fast weight loss. The main products are the 24-or 48-hour Hollywood Diet, based on the company's juices, and the Cookie Diet. The juice blends include essential oil extracts and vitamins, said to help stimulate metabolism. The company claims users can detox by consuming only the juice for up to 48 hours, avoiding solid foods, and also lose up to 10 pounds. On the Cookie Diet, users replace up to three meals a day with a low-fat cookie, which contains vitamins and minerals, and eat a low-fat dinner.
Lemon Detox Diet
The Lemon Detox Diet is another popular teen diet; one of the main reasons is that singer Beyonce Knowles used it to lose weight for an upcoming video shoot. It is considered a fad diet and can be dangerous for teens because of the recommendation that the dieter not consume any solid foods for up to three days. Lemons, maple syrup and cayenne pepper are added to a pitcher of water to create the diet drink. It's suggested followers drink six to 10 glasses of this mixture throughout the day along with water.
