The generically named drug fluticasone is marketed in the United States under several Flovent brand-name variations, including Flovent Diskus, Flovent HFA, Flovent and Flovent Rotadisk. Your physician may prescribe this corticosteroid medication to prevent asthma symptoms from occurring. It is inhaled daily to reduce the severity and number of attacks of asthma. It does not help, the Mayo Clinic reports, during an asthma attack. Flovent also may be prescribed for you if you suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
White Spots
The most common serious side effect of inhaling Flovent, according to the Mayo Clinic, is developing white patches in your throat or mouth. The patches may be painful, according to the National Institutes of Health. Although they may not at first appear to be serious, consult your physician immediately if you notice these effects.
Flu-Like Syndrome
Many types of medicines can cause what is called flu-like syndrome. The name is derived from the fact that a set of symptoms occurs as side effects that resemble influenza or the common cold. Flovent may induce flu-like syndrome when you begin using it. The side effects that are part of this may include a runny nose, nasal congestion, swelling of the sinuses and other such problems. You also may have a fever and chills. Your throat may be sore and your sinuses may swell. With your initial use of Flovent, you also may develop a cough and get headaches. According to Drugs.com, such flu-symptom side effects all should be temporary, lasting only a few days. They are categorized as non-serious and do not generally require medical attention. Consult your doctor if they persist for a week or more.
Speaking Difficulties
Because of the hoarseness and throat soreness associated with taking inhalations of Flovent, you may find it difficult to speak, according to the National Institutes of Health. While this will be temporary and non-serious for most people, the organization recommends you tell your doctor about it seems severe or it continues beyond the first week of use.
