Aromatherapy neck wraps are used to deliver the essential oils that are helpful for relaxation and stress reduction, and to treat a variety of medical conditions that range from chronic pain and depression to headaches and muscle tension. The essential oils used in aromatherapy neck wraps are designed to be inhaled and absorbed through the skin. To avoid potential complications, patients should consult with a physician before employing any alternative therapies.

Function

The essential oils are mixed with a carrier oil, usually vegetable oil, and applied to the wraps prior to putting them on the skin. Doctors at the American Cancer Society report that cancer patients who use an aromatherapy neck wrap inhale the scents of the oils and often experience a sense of peace, and have reduced anxiety and stress about their disease and its treatment.

Types

Different oils have varying degrees of effectiveness, report doctors at the American Cancer Society. For example, ginger, cardamom oil and peppermint have been shown to be effective in reducing nausea created by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Black pepper essence has helped to reduce the cravings for tobacco. Citrus fragrances can help to reduce the amount of medication needed by patients suffering from depression and other mental disorders.

Expert Insight

Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center report that lavender is one of the most effective essential oils for treating insomnia, stress, hair loss and anxiety. A neck wrap filled with lavender essential oils may be particularly useful in treating postoperative pain following neck or shoulder surgery. People with chronic neck pain from overuse may find relief with a lavender neck wrap.

Benefits

In addition to the scents that are near to the nasal openings when the wrap is placed around the neck, the essential oils in a neck wrap can help to soothe tight or sore neck muscles. Various oils produce different results. Ginger can help to relieve joint pain, while juniper berries have properties that relieve muscle spasms. Black pepper is used to stimulate circulation and reduce swelling. Allspice and cloves commonly are used as pain relievers and sedatives.

Effects

The effects of the essential oils in an aromatherapy neck wrap are released when the accessory is heated. Most wraps are covered in cloth and padded to protect the skin from burns. Neck wraps with essential oils inside typically are designed to be heated in a microwave oven. Neck wraps also can be used for those who feel the need for cold therapy by first freezing the wrap.
