Child rearing involves a broad spectrum of things that go into how a child develops has a person. Dr. Kevin Ryan at the Boston University School of Education states that a good parent will plan ahead and set aside time to be with his child. When your child knows you care about what she does by providing emotional support and unconditional love, you are taking positive steps in your child rearing.
Encouragement
One of the main factors in child rearing is encouraging your child to be the best that he can be. The Illinois Early Learning Project states that encouragement allows your child to feel good and raises his self esteem. Choose at least one good thing that your child does each day and acknowledge it verbally. This could be manners, behavior or sharing that he engages in. If your child doesn't get a good grade on a test or loses a softball game, let him know you are there to support him and encourage him to keep trying.
Discipline
Kids Health states that being consistent with your child is one of the most important tools in effective child discipline. Rearing your child to be a good adult involves sticking with disciplinary action even if the child begs and pleads to get her way. Discipline should be carried out with a positive speech about why the child is being punished. If she stole something from someone else, she needs to know that it isn't right to take something that doesn't belong to you. When you take away her favorite toy and she cries, explain that it is a reminder to her not to repeat the pattern and that penalties are more harsh as an adult.
Educational Support
Giving your support to your child is an important tool in child rearing. It lets him know that you are there unconditionally and with an open mind. PBS Parents reports that advocating for your child is important in childhood, especially if the child may be struggling with his education. If you feel your child isn't getting the right help for his disability or school issue, understand there are resources available through the Disabilities Resources website that will help you find organizations in your area that will assist you with your child's education.
Guidance
Raising a child means showing her direction and teaching her perseverance through life. Guidance comes from maintaining good moral character as a parent by obeying the law, staying away from drugs and sharing your religious beliefs with your child. Life Matters states that being a positive and respectful parent means developing a parenting style that can be positively used throughout childhood, enforces rewards as good behavior and eliminates spanking.
Family Values
Family values are very important when it comes to child rearing. Families big or small with one parent or multiple parent roles all should instill some kind of family value into their child's upbringing. Family IQ states that traditional family values are based on love, work and play. Families should balance all three to find happiness and raise healthy and happy children.
