Takara foot patches are one of many brands of detoxifying foot patches on the market. Other brand names include Detoxion and DtoxPatch. These products are the source of some controversy, with many claims of "scientific proof" but no actual studies cited, and the usual litany of glowing testimonials that accompany all heavily advertised products. Customer reviews are mixed, with roughly 50 percent citing good (albeit foul-smelling) results and the other 50 percent claiming that all such foot patches are a scam.
Ingredients
Takara foot patches contain bamboo vinegar, wood vinegar, tourmalin, saururus chinensis (also known as chinese lizard's tail), houttuynia cordata (chameleon plant), eucalyptus, agaricus mushroom, chitosan and cornstarch.
Use
Peel the backing from the large adhesive patch, then place the Takara foot patch, lettered side facing down, in the middle of the adhesive patch. Adhere the large sticky pad (and thus the Takara patch, too) to the sole of your foot, underneath the arch. Leave in place for six to 12 hours. Place a sock over the patch, if necessary, to keep you from kicking it off during the night or loosening it while walking around.
Repeat the applications as often as you like, on one or both feet. Using the patches on both feet at once is purported to speed cleansing, and according to marketing materials, the average individual might need a month or more of daily use on both feet to cleanse the body of toxins.
Claims
According to the manufacturer, Takara foot patches are based on the "original Japanese formulation," attributed to Takao Matsushita and Itsuko Kawase. Interestingly enough, another product--Kawase Takara--claims to be the "only" authentic result of Kawase's research as well. A sticky brown foot patch is said to indicate a continuing need for detox. As you use the product consistently and your body is (according to manufacturer claims) cleansed, the used patches will purportedly be drier and whiter.
Contraindications
Because Takara foot patches contain chitosan, which is derived from crustacean shells, individuals with shellfish allergies or sensitivities should seek medical advice before using the product. Don't apply the Takara patch over open wounds or irritated skin.
Cost
Takara foot patches typically sell for just over $1 each through the manufacturer website. They're available in packages of up to 180 patches (good for 90 days if you use one patch on each foot every night). You might also see Takara foot patches marketed on TV infomercials and through other online vendors.
