Yoga mats can be susceptible to germs and can be a breeding ground for bacteria if they are not kept clean. Warm, humid conditions found in yoga studios are the perfect environment for bacteria to live and grow. You can eliminate bacteria from your mat by wiping it down or fully submerging it in soap and water.
Function
Cleaning your mat functions as a preventative measure against germs and bacteria. The heat and moisture common in yoga studios is an environment conducive to bacteria. Consistent cleaning of your yoga mat helps to stop further bacteria from spreading to your mat and to you. Don't lend your yoga mat to others.
Time Frame
In order to keep your yoga mat clean, it needs to be wiped down after every use. A sponge, towel or rag will work for this purpose. If you have not cleaned your mat in a long time, submerge your yoga mat into a solution of water and soap. You can leave you mat in this solution for 10 minutes and then gently scrub the surface of the mat until it looks and smells clean.
Types
Various cleaning solutions can be used to clean your yoga mat. The first type is a solution of 2 cups of water to four drops of organic, all-natural dish soap. The second type of cleaning solution is equal parts water to organic apple cider vinegar. Once your mat is clean, rinse the mat with water, rub it down with a dry towel and hang it up to air dry.
Considerations
The types of yoga mat cleaning solutions vary. Organic liquid soaps, dish soaps or other natural antibacterial cleaners with an alcohol base work because of their natural ingredients and the ability to clean without causing irritation to your skin.
Make Your Own
You can make your own anti-fungal yoga mat spray. This keeps your mat smelling fresh and helps to disinfect. Use a spray bottle and fill it with water and add 3 drops of essential oils. Tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, or lavender oil will make a suitable mat spray. This is not an alternative to washing your mat, but essential oils keep bacteria and odor away.
