Dark discoloration under the arms is commonly associated with a condition called acanthosis nigricans. However, it is also a reaction to certain ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants seen in people with sensitive skin and a known side effect of certain pharmaceuticals. As the Cleveland Clinic explains, dark underarms should prompt a checkup from your doctor because they can point to underlying medical concerns including obesity, high insulin levels or thyroid or pituitary gland disorders. How to get rid of your dark underarm discoloration depends in part on its cause.
Step 1
Try a different deodorant or antiperspirant. As DermaDoctor explains, people with sensitive skin, eczema, acanthosis nigricans, diabetes, allergies to cosmetic dyes or fragrances and those prone to razor burn are most at risk for reactions to underarm products, including discoloration. Switch to a water-based antiperspirant or deodorant without dyes or fragrances that doesn't leave behind a white residue. It should be made with aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex glycine.
Step 2
Check the known side effects of your prescriptions. The Cleveland Clinic points out that dark discoloration under the arms is a side effect of certain oral contraceptives, cholesterol medications and growth hormone therapy, and that cessation of these drugs can clear up dark discoloration. Discuss alternatives with your doctor to see if other prescriptions may be right for you.
Step 3
Lose weight and keep diabetes in check. This addresses the most prevalent causes of acanthosis nigricans and can fade dark discoloration under the arms, according to the Mayo Clinic. Weight and diabetes control is also important to prevent recurrence of discoloration, notes the Cleveland Clinic. Eat a well-balanced diet, limit consumption of starches and sugar and incorporate aerobic exercise and weight training into your weekly routine.
Step 4
Apply a bleaching cream to the discolored skin. Hydroquinone is an effective active ingredient, according to the New Zealand Dermatological Society, which points out that up to two percent concentrations are available over the counter and up to four percent concentrations are available by prescription. The Cleveland Clinic also suggests prescription products made with retinol, salicyclic acid, urea or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). DermaDoctor suggests the botanical skin brightener kojic dipalmitate.
Step 5
Talk to your dermatologist about cosmetic procedures that can get rid of dark armpit discoloration. Dermabrasion and laser therapy are possible treatments, as cited by the Mayo Clinic.
Tips and Warnings
- Exercise for weight control is essential to treating acanthosis nigricans. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends half an hour of moderately intense aerobic exercise five days a week and eight to ten weight training exercises twice a week, completing eight to 12 repetitions of each. Remember to check with your doctor before beginning an exercise regimen, and to start gradually, building your way up to meeting these guidelines.
