The Master Cleanse, also known as the Master Cleanser or the lemonade diet, is a weight loss and detoxification program created by Stanley Burroughs. The diet involves drinking a mixture of lemon juice, water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper for an extended amount of time. Follow the Master Cleanse at your own risk. Stanley Burroughs, who was not a doctor, was charged with involuntary manslaughter when a patient died while following the Master Cleanse, says Jocelyn Voo in "Fitness" magazine. Attempt the Master Cleanse only under the strict supervision of a doctor.
Step 1
Eat only living foods for one day, three days before the diet. Living foods, like fruits and vegetables, are easier to digest than foods like meat or eggs. Eat organic foods when possible.
Step 2
Drink only fresh fruit and vegetable juices and vegetable broth for one day, two days before the diet.
Step 3
Drink only fresh-squeezed orange juice the day before the diet.
Step 4
Prepare the lemonade mixture on the first day of the diet. Combine 2 tbsp. lemon juice, 2 tbsp. maple syrup, 1/10 tsp. cayenne pepper and 8 oz. of cold water in a glass.
Step 5
Drink the lemonade mixture or water whenever you feel thirsty throughout the day.
Step 6
Continue the diet as long as you feel comfortable with it. Burroughs recommends staying on the diet for at least two weeks.
Step 7
Ease out of the diet by drinking only orange juice the first day, drinking only fruit and vegetable juices the second day, and eating only living foods the third day.
