1. Drink Up
Our bodies on average contain around 75 percent water and if a person does not properly hydrate this can affect their metabolism. This is because the liver will start to work on retaining water if it believes the body needs it, instead of working on burning fat. Therefore, to maintain proper metabolism and use it to lose weight, according to the Mayo Cline, a person should consume 3 liters of fluids every day. Now understand that all food contains some water, so if you eat normally that amount is actually 2 liters per day.
2. Basal Metabolic Rate
You will hear the term basal metabolic rate used in conjunction with metabolism quite often. Even though it sounds complicated, it is just a fancy term for how many calories you burn when at rest. To increase the basal metabolic rate, or BMR, a person needs to stock their bodies with more lean muscle tissue and have less fatty tissue. The reason being that muscle burns more calories at rest than fat; if the person exercises regularly this will change the rate for the better. There is a test conducted by doctors to find an accurate BMR, so ask your doctor if he is able to conduct this test. To get an overall idea of your BMR there are online calculators to let you know an approximation on the amount of calories your body burns at rest.
3. Eat More Often
Everyone grew up with the idea of three meals a day and this is a tough habit to break. However, the more often you eat sensible meals the more a person can rev up that metabolic furnace. Understand that proper weight loss still equals calories consumed versus calories burned, but if you can stay away from those heavy meals and eat five to six smaller healthy meals throughout the day, this can increase a person's metabolism.
4. Take the Stairs
To noticeably affect your metabolic rate, exercise more and become more active in your day-to-day life. Minor changes in your lifestyle or habit can increase the metabolic rate. Take those stairs at work instead of taking the elevator. Park the car at the back of the parking lot and walk farther to your destination. Start slowly with these lifestyle changes and eventually work your way up to exercise plans and gym memberships. Just get up off the couch and get active. No matter what it is, just keep that body moving.
5. No Skipping Meals
You may be so busy that you have no time to eat but do this at your own metabolic peril. Skipping meals causes the metabolic rate to slow because the body has no idea when the next meal is coming. For all your body knows, you could be stranded in the desert and need to store fat for energy until a rescue arrives. So never skip meals and, if possible, eat frequent healthy meals to rev up your metabolic engine.
