If you have hair loss caused by a fungal infection, your doctor may recommend using a shampoo to treat the condition. An antifungal shampoo can penetrate the scalp and weaken fungal cells. You should only treat hair loss with an antifungal shampoo after consulting with your doctor because there are numerous other causes of balding. Although antifungal shampoos are available over the counter, prescription types have higher concentrations of the medicine.
Step 1
Pick up the Nizoral shampoo from your pharmacy. The prescription strength shampoo contains a two percent concentration of the antifungal medication ketoconazole. The one percent concentrated version is available over the counter, but not as effective for treating fungal infection-related hair loss.
Step 2
Wet the hair completely with warm water. Apply a generous amount of the shampoo to the scalp and hair. During application, avoid the eyes, nose and mouth. Contact a doctor in the case of ingestion of the medication.
Step 3
Massage the shampoo thoroughly into the scalp for several minutes. Leave the solution in place for a minimum of five minutes.
Step 4
Rinse out the shampoo residue with warm water. If instructed by a doctor, you may need to repeat application immediately after rinsing. Dry the hair as you normally would.
Step 5
Use the Nizoral shampoo every three days or as directed by your doctor to cure the infection. He may suggest usage for as long as eight weeks to completely get rid of the fungal infection.
Tips and Warnings
- Even if you notice hair regrowth, you should continue the entire course recommended by your doctor. The infection can return if you stop the medication too soon. According to the American Hair Loss Association website, there are no significant side effects of Nizoral shampoo.
- Do not use shampoo to treat hair loss in children under 12 years old unless advised by a physician.
