Approximately 5 percent of children and adolescents suffer from depression at one point or another, according to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Unlike adults, most children do not admit to feelings of depression, according to the University of Michigan Depression Center, leaving parents to look for changes in mood, habits and behavior. Recognizing the early signs of depression in kids can help them get the prompt treatment they need.
Mood Changes
Children who are depressed are often unable to communicate feelings of sadness, which instead manifest in tearfulness or a sense of hopelessness. Some children experience increased irritability, anger or even hostility, which according to the University of Michigan Depression Center can lead to conflicts with authorities. Feelings of boredom, low self-esteem and even guilt can also be early warning signs of depression in kids.
Behavioral Changes
Children who are depressed often stop enjoying favorite pastimes and show a decreased interest in all activities, which in turn can lead to social isolation or difficulties with relationships. It is not uncommon for these children to speak of leaving home. Although this is probably not an early sign, in extreme cases of childhood depression self-destructive behaviors can occur, and in these cases prompt treatment is critical.
Physical Changes
Depression in children often manifests itself physically, with kids complaining frequently of vague physical symptoms, such as headaches and stomachaches. Others may have difficulty concentrating or experience low energy, according to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
Habit Changes
Red flags for depression in kids also include changes in eating habits, whether it's an increase or decrease in appetite. Sleeping habits are often affected. While some find it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep, other children cannot seem to get enough sleep and are constantly tired. Frequent absences from school or an academic decline are other early warning signs of depression in kids.
