Home Remedies for a Dry, Sore Throat in the Early Morning Hours

Although sore throats are more frequently associated with a cold or flu, they can also be caused by exposure to cigarette smoke and other environmental irritants, arid environments or simply by using your voice too much, says "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies." A sore throat that lingers or occurs with other symptoms, such as fever, may necessitate a visit to your doctor. But a dry, sore throat that wakes you up well before your alarm clock sounds can be soothed with time-tested home remedies.

Humidify

Humidity is one remedy for a dry, sore throat. "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies" suggests turning on the hot water in your bathroom sink. Bend over the sink and drape a towel over your head to keep in the steam. Inhale for five to 10 minutes through both your mouth and nose. The Mayo Clinic suggests placing a humidifier in your bedroom to prevent the tender mucous membranes in your throat from getting dry, which will make it easier for you to remain asleep. Clean your humidifier and change the water at least once every three days to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold.

Hydrate

When you have a dry, sore throat, the last thing you should do is reach for your morning cup of coffee--caffeinated beverages cause dehydration and should be avoided, along with those that contain alcohol, says the Mayo Clinic. Drink plenty of water or juice, or sip on warm broth or tea throughout the day. According to "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies," decaffeinated tea and honey is a frequently used home remedy for a dry, sore throat. The Mayo Clinic suggests stirring honey and lemon juice into warm water (to taste) and sipping it. This keeps you hydrated and soothes your throat at the same time.

Soothe

Gargling with salt water moisturizes your throat and provides temporary relief, says "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies." Mix 1 tsp. salt into 1 pint of warm water--don't go overboard on the salt, as too much will dry your throat. Donald Davis, Ph.D., a researcher at the University of Texas-Austin who was part of a study that indicated that zinc gluconate tablets could soothe a sore throat and reduce cold symptoms, advises allowing zinc tablets to dissolve in the mouth and coat the throat rather than swallowing them. However, he cautions that zinc lozenges should be used no more than seven days, as too much zinc can affect your ability to absorb other vitamins and minerals.

Avoid Irritants

Reduce or eliminate exposure to environmental irritants that make a dry, sore throat worse, such as cigarette smoke, household cleansers and paint, advises the Mayo Clinic. If your sore throat has affected your larynx (voice box), a morning chat with coworkers can make it worse. Give your voice a little rest and relaxation.
