Dark spots on your hands are called age spots, and they are usually caused by too much sun exposure. The age spots are caused by a decrease in your hormones that control the amount of melanin in your skin. When your hands are exposed to the sun for too long, ultraviolet rays from the sun damage the collagen and elastin in your skin, making it easier for melanin to build up. When too much melanin builds up in your skin, dark age spots form on your hands. However, you can help remove the brown spots from your skin.
Step 1
Exfoliate your skin. When you exfoliate your skin, you remove the top layer of your skin, the part of your skin that contains the most melanin. Using a loofah, rub your hands vigorously in the shower or bathtub. Exfoliation will get rid of the dead skin, which will reduce the color of your age spots.
Step 2
Dab on lemon juice. This citrus juice is a natural bleach that will fade the brown spots on your skin. Either squeeze fresh lemon juice from a lemon or use reconstituted lemon juice. Dip a cotton ball in the lemon juice and rub it over the dark spots on your hand. Then place cotton balls with lemon juice on the dark spots for at least 10 minutes.
Step 3
Stay out of the sun. Since sunlight is the main culprit of causing age spots, it is critical that you stay out of the sun. If you already have age spots, the sun will make them much darker. If you have to be in the sun, use sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15.
Step 4
Use buttermilk. Buttermilk is filled with a natural bleach that will fade the dark spots on your skin. Buttermilk will also help increase the rate at which your cells produce and your skin regenerates. The faster your skin regenerates, the faster the dark spots on your hands will lighten. Soak a few cotton balls in the buttermilk, and rub them over your dark spots. Leave the cotton balls on for at least 10 minutes.
Step 5
Apply topical treatments. Buy a good over-the-counter skin cream at the pharmacy that contains hydroquinone, alpha hydoxy acids, vitamin C or antioxidants such as retinol, which is a vitamin A compound. If the OTC treatment fails to produce the desired effect, go to a dermatologist to get a prescription for a skin cream or gel.
