Two of the classic symptoms of the common cold are a cough and itchy throat, according to the Mayo Clinic. A cold is a viral infection in the upper respiratory tract, which consists of the throat and nose. In the United States, Americans suffer from 1 billion colds annually, according to the National Institutes of Health. A cold typically runs its course in one or two weeks. In the interim, a few home remedies may relieve an itchy throat and cough.

Saltwater

A scratchy and itchy throat may improve temporarily by gargling with saltwater. The Mayo Clinic suggests sprinkling about ½ tsp. of salt into an 8-oz. glass of warm water. Gargle the mixture for several seconds then spit it out.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Gargling with apple cider vinegar may help relieve sore throat pain. Health 911.com says mixing approximately 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water can help kill bacteria because of its acidic nature. It is recommended that you rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after gargling to keep acid from eating away at your tooth enamel.

Honey and Lemon Water

Honey and lemon water can help soothe the throat and temporarily relieve a cough. The Mayo Clinic warns, however, that honey should not be given to infants under 1 year of age. Honey may contain botulism bacteria, which babies are unable to properly digest.

Zinc

Using zinc nasal sprays or taking zinc lozenges at the first sign of a cold may help minimize its symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, the University of Maryland Medical Center says further research is needed to determine which type of zinc may work best and for which type of cold virus.

Humidity

Cold viruses flourish in dry air, which can further irritate a scratchy, itchy throat. Using a humidifier can add much needed moisture to the air in your home. The Mayo Clinic says a cool mist humidifier or vaporizer can temporarily relieve coughing and congestion.
