Citalopram, sold under the brand name of Celexa, treats depression, according to RxList. Classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), citalopram has numerous possible side effects as well as serious life-threatening adverse reactions. Patients and family members should read the medication package inserts carefully to understand all possible side effects. As with any medication, should you experience side effects that feel unmanageable or become serious, talk to your health care provider.

Greater Depression

Patients may feel a deepening sense of depression and anxiety symptoms while taking citalopram, according to the "PDR Nurse's Drug Handbook." During the first few weeks of taking citalopram, patients may experience mood swings until their systems acclimate to the effects of the drug. Patients should pay close attention to any drastic mood swings, and ask family members to alert them to significant changes they observe. Increases in irritability, insomnia and a desire for isolation may signal intensifying depression. Thoughts of suicide are the most dangerous side effect of citalopram. In cases of increased suicidal ideation, seek immediate medical help.

Blood Pressure Abnormalities

Orthostatic hypotension, or sudden drops in blood pressure, may occur upon rising from a reclining or sitting position to standing up while on citalopram. These pressure drops can cause dizziness, headaches, migraines and even fainting. Irregularities in blood pressure may impair concentration and make breathing difficult as a result of decreased blood flow to the brain and lungs, according to "Mosby's 2010 Nursing Drug Reference." If this side effect occurs on a consistent basis, a doctor should be consulted for a possible modification in dosage. Hypotension may be symptomatic of a separate underlying circulation issue not yet diagnosed.

Reproductive System Disorders

Many drugs in the SSRI category may have reproductive and sexual dysfunction side effects. Women may experience painful menstruation and an absence of menses while taking citalopram, and should report any occurrence of two or more missed periods in a row to the doctor. Men may experience difficulty in ejaculating or impotence, according to RxList. Should these side effects occur repeatedly or cause concern, discuss them with a health care provider. Men and women may both notice a decrease in libido, but this commonly happens more in women than men taking citalopram. An absence of orgasm is common to both sexes.
