4 Ways to Do Basic Shuffles in Tap Dance

1. Just the Shuffle

Shuffles are an important and basic part of tap dancing. You can perform shuffles alone at varying rates of speed, or you can include them in more complicated tap combinations. It's impossible to advance beyond the beginning level of tap dance without knowing how to shuffle, and you'll learn shuffles early on in your tap dance training. Fortunately, though, shuffles are easy to master. An important thing to keep in mind is that your heel will never touch the ground when you're performing a shuffle. When you're first learning, no matter what age you are, you might need to exaggerate the motion until you're completely familiar with what your feet need to do. Once you get familiar with the motion, you can tone down your foot movements until they're more subtle.

2. Front and Center

The most frequent way to do basic shuffles in tap dance is to perform them facing the front of your body. A variation of the shuffle includes performing them with your legs facing your sides. As your right leg returns to starting position, you'll begin shuffling with your left leg. When your left leg returns to starting position, you'll shuffle your right leg out. Next, you'll repeat this sequence multiple times and stop when you desire.

3. Shuffle Off to Buffalo

The shuffle off to buffalo is an intermediate tap combination that expertly combines shuffles. The shuffle off to buffalo includes the shuffle step performed to the side. Contrary to the name of this step sounds, you can perform this step in your place without moving laterally. A basic step that incorporate shuffles is the shuffle hop step, and even very young dancers learn this step.

4. Fast and Fabulous Feet

The shuffle by itself can actually be a complicated step if you increase the intensity. It's incredibly difficult to perform multiple shuffles in a row at a very fast speed, yet the complexity is the result of the speed involved in doing a usually easy step at a very fast pace. Once you've mastered easier combinations that include the shuffle, you might consider seeing how fast you can shuffle. Performing this step at a rapid pace will be visually appealing for your audience, so spend time perfecting shuffles at a fast pace. Just make sure when choreographing you choose the step when it matches the music.
