Dizziness can include feeling light headed, faint, weak, off balance or that the room is spinning. It can be temporary, such as when you are sick with a cold or flu, or as a part of motion sickness. In most cases, dizziness is not a sign of a serious medical problem. There are some common causes of dizziness that can be treated.
Vertigo
Vertigo is a condition that makes you feel like the room is spinning. You may even feel sick to your stomach if it is severe enough, states the Mayo Clinic. Vertigo is usually the result of a problem with the nerves in your inner ear. Whenever you move your head, the nerves and other structures in the inner ear send signals to the brain. Your brain can then tell your body how to respond in order to maintain balance. There are many causes of vertigo. There maybe structural damage to the inner ear, too much fluid buildup or an infection. Your doctor can run tests to determine the cause of your condition and then work with you to find a treatment plan.
Circulation Problems
According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, dizziness can happen if your blood pressure drops too low. This symptom can be the result of a heart condition that reduces blood flow (coronary artery disease) or makes your pulse irregular. In these cases your body will not get the oxygen it needs and you can become dizzy. There is also a condition called orthostatic hypotension where your blood pressure drops when you transition from lying down or sitting to standing too quickly. If you feel dizzy and also experience chest pain, trouble breathing or weakness you need to get immediate medical attention as this can be a warning sign of a heart attack. Keeping track of your blood pressure and cholesterol along with managing any heart conditions you have, will help to control your dizziness.
Anxiety
The Vestibular Disorders Association states that felling stressed, anxious or overly tired can lead to sensations of dizziness. As your body responds to feelings of anxiety your brain stem may not function normally which can throw you off balance. In addition, if you have tendency to hyperventilate your body will expel too much carbon dioxide. This can affect the cells of the brain and lead to feeling dizzy. Stress can contribute to the heart conditions mentioned above, which can make you lightheaded.
Dehydration and Medication
Dizziness is a common problem in the elderly and it can lead to a life changing fall and loss of independence. The American Geriatrics Society states that it can reduce the quality of life for many, but once the cause is determined it can usually be treated successfully. If you do not drink enough water your body will become depleted and you may start to feel dizzy. Many medications can also cause dizziness as a side effect. Any dizziness that occurs on a regular basis should be discussed with your doctor. In some cases changes to your diet or current medications may be all that it takes.
