Thai hand reflexology is based on ancient Asian medical philosophies. Practitioners believe that tenderness in certain points in the hands can indicate illnesses in other parts of the body. Reflexology is believed to have a therapeutic effect on areas of the body to which these "reflex points" are linked.
The American Cancer Society warns valid research has not verified claims of reflexology's effectiveness in treating disease, and suggests it should only be administered by licensed practitioners.

Treatment of the Head, Brain and Sinuses

Reflexologists Barbara and Kevin Kunz state that the fingers, from the farthest knuckle to the tip, are the location of reflex points that correspond to the head, brain and sinuses. They state that targeting these reflex points will aid in circulation and increase brain function.
Thai massage practitioner Beatrice Avraham recommends applying pressure to the base of the fingers, where they join the hand, as a treatment for headache and toothache.

Treatment of the Reproductive System

Reflex points corresponding to the uterus and prostate exist on the back and front of the wrists, on the lateral, or thumb, side. Kunz and Kunz recommend stimulating these points by using firm finger pressure in a rotating motion. They cite stimulation of these regions as an aid to fertility and a helpful technique for addressing impotence, prostate enlargement, PMS and the symptoms of menopause.

Pressure Points for Pain

Avraham cites the web at the juncture of the thumb and first finger as a significant pressure point. This point, referred to by Chinese physicans as "Hegu," is effective in relieving pain from toothache, headache and stomachache. She cautions against stimulation of this area in pregnant women.
Kunz and Kunz refer to this region as the "solar plexus" refex area. Like Avraham, they also recommend it as a general pain reliever.
