Archery is a precision sport where the archer releases a bow string to propel an arrow at an intended target. The basic, essential pieces of equipment are simple and can provide consistency through dedicated practice. Additional equipment, however, is available to enhance the ability to consistently shoot accurate arrows.
History
During the Crusades in England, archers used simple bows and arrows made from wood and released the bow string with their fingers. Equipment has evolved with technology, and today's archer uses advanced equipment developed through the years. In 1937, the first bow sights were used, and by 1970, release aids revolutionized the sport of archery when they were introduced at the Vegas Shoot, a Las Vegas-based archery competition.
Function
The overall goal of archery is to consistently shoot arrows into the bulls-eye because shooting more arrows into the bulls-eye results in a higher score. The equipment is designed to increase accuracy by allowing the shooter to have a consistent anchor point and release with finely tuned equipment.
Types
Archers have a wide selection of different pieces of equipment for their bow. Each piece of equipment is designed to work under different conditions. The most essential piece of equipment is the bow. Additional equipment for the bow includes sights, release aids, rests and arrows. Different sights are available based on the shooter and shooting style. For example, some archers prefer a one-pin sight, while other prefer to use a five-pin sight.
Considerations
During every shot, the bow, arrow and bow arm undergo shock and vibration. A high level of shock and vibration can decrease accuracy by putting extra stress on the arrow during flight or by adjusting the grip on the bow handle. As a result, equipment has been developed to dampen shock and vibration during and after the shot. This equipment is typically made from rubber and can be placed on the bow string, limbs and riser.
Accessories
Accessories to the essential archery equipment are endless. Each accessory is designed to enhance the shooting experience and can also lead to improved accuracy. Examples of common accessories include quivers, cases, targets, stabilizers or kisser buttons. Quivers hold extra arrows and can be mounted directly to the bow or placed on your hip. Cases protect the bow and additional equipment when not in use. Stabilizers help to counter-balance the weight of the bow while at full draw. And the kisser buttons help to achieve a consistent anchor point during every shot.
