There are 13 vitamins your body needs in order to grow and develop normally, some of which directly influence hair growth. If you have been experiencing an increase of hairs flowing down the drain, you may need hair loss vitamins that work. While you can get vitamins from the foods you eat, there are also many available as a supplement to prevent hair loss.

Vitamin C

This water-soluble vitamin is required for normal growth and development. Without it, hair can become dry and begin to split. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning a nutrient that can block some damage from free radicals. It is essential for healing and repairing, as well as for forming collagen.

Vitamin E

Vitamin H (Biotin)

Vitamin H, also more well-known as biotin helps promote faster hair growth. This B-complex vitamin is water soluble and helps to grow and strengthen hair. Vitamin H can be found in numerous cosmetic products to help both nails and hair grow faster. Additionally, it can be found in sardines, pecans, peanuts, almonds, brewer's yeast, whole grains and bananas. One of the best sources of vitamin H is in egg yolk; however, raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that gets in the way of vitamin H absorption.

Iron

Iron is the primary cause of anemia throughout the world. Anemia causes a lack of red blood cells in the body. Over time, normal iron supplies become depleted, resulting in anemia. Without iron, the blood in your body cannot carry oxygen to the cells throughout your body. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, this can cause a hair disorder called alopecia, which stunts hair growth and makes it dry, dull and brittle. Iron can be found as a supplement or in meats, especially liver, raisins, egg yolks, fish and whole grain breads.

L-Lysine

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, this essential amino acid can be taken each day to address nutritional deficiencies and prevent hair loss. The recommended supplement amount is 500 to 1,000 mg per day. It is also found in dark leafy greens, vegetables and whole grains.
