Improving the look of a skateboard is an easy way to put some life back into an old deck or to make a blank deck look a little more interesting. Many options are available for improving the look of a board, but a particularly good idea is to place your own unique designs on a board, making your deck stand out from the crowd.

Step 1

Visit skate stores and carry out some research on the Internet to get some ideas of how you would like to customize your deck and make it look cool. You might want to base your artwork on an existing design or create your own from scratch.

Step 2

Cut thin cardboard to the size of your deck to use as a template for your chosen design. Draw your design on the cardboard in marker and carefully cut around it with scissors or a razor blade to provide a template that you can use to paint or draw your design onto your deck.

Step 3

Prepare your deck for customization. A blank deck is the easiest to customize. Start by removing all hardware and sanding down the varnished protective layer of the deck with coarse sandpaper. (You may want to wear a mask when sanding.) If your deck has a graphic design, sand until it has been restored back to the wooden surface of the deck. Then wipe down the deck with a cloth.

Step 4

Tape your template onto your deck with masking tape. Fill in or trace around the edges of the template to transfer your design. You may want to use a number of colors or coats of paint on the deck. When complete, leave the paint or marker to dry fully.

Step 5

Remove your template and inspect the artwork. If you think you need a further coat of material, carefully reapply your template and carry this out. However if you are happy with the results, you can protect the artwork. Apply a coat of clear wood varnish or lacquer across the length and width of the deck to preserve the design. You may want to use two or three layers to give the design added protection.

Step 6

Gently sand down the deck with fine-grade sandpaper to ensure that you are left with a smooth finish. Wipe down any residue and replace your hardware.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you change your mind about your design, sand the board back down and start again. Avoid doing this too many times, however, as the deck will weaken.
  • Always supervise children when using tools and paints. Adults should help children with all cutting and sanding steps. You may want to use extra protective equipment like gloves and masks when customizing decks.
