Individuals of all shapes, sizes and ages bicycle. Bicycling accommodates all ability levels and is an enjoyable activity in which families can participate. Safety tips are intended for use by everyone, not just the young and inexperienced riders. Knowing and practicing safety procedures can help ensure that cyclists are as safe as possible out on the road.
Helmets
Wear a helmet and remind those you know the importance of wearing a helmet! According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 95 percent of bicyclists killed in 2006 weren't wearing helmets. Helmets can save lives and protect from head injuries during a bicycling accident. Wear a properly fitted helmet on every ride.
Colorful Clothing
Wearing bright colors helps the bicyclist to stand out in traffic. Being visible is important in avoiding auto related bike accidents.
Music
Music devices should not be worn while bike riding. The music impedes the cyclist's ability to hear what is going on around him. Being attentive and alert is important. A cyclist should be able to hear a car approaching, another rider calling out a warning, and other disruptions.
Hand Signals
Learn the correct hand signals to be able to alert others of intentions to turn, stop, slow down, and point out road hazards along the route. Be predictable. When riding in a group, potholes, debris, loose gravel and other items need to be pointed out to others to avoid causing a crash.
Obey Traffic Laws
Cyclists are expected to obey all traffic laws, signs and signals. Bicycles must obey the same laws as cars. Bicyclists need to yield to pedestrians, as well as stop at all stop signs and red lights. Always ride with traffic.
