People who are trying to lose weight may be enticed by the quick and easy weight loss promises offered by weight loss pills. Most of these pills, however, haven't been tested or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Some may be ineffective and some may be dangerous, according the Mayo Clinic. Even without using weight loss pills, you can still lose weight with some effort.
Healthy Diet
Eating foods that are low fat and lean will help you to lose weight without pills. Your diet program should be based on the USDA's food pyramid, which has six primary food groups: vegetables, lean protein, fruits, oils, grains and milk. The food pyramid is based on your gender, age and activity level. Using a checklist to track your food intake each day ensures that you eat enough of each food group without eating too much.
Exercise
Staying active is an important part of a weight-loss program because you have to use more calories than you eat if you want to lose weight. You can go swimming, biking, hiking, do exercise videos, participate in an exercise class, lift weights, play sports or go for a walk. Whatever activities you choose to do, you should exercise for 60 to 90 minutes per day on most days of the week, as this is recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine. When you exercise, you should aim for moderate level intensity, meaning your heart rate is elevated and you can still talk but you are sweating.
Motivation
Lack of motivation is one of the reasons why dieters don't succeed. To stay motivated, write out your weight loss goals. You can also list the things you want to do after you lose weight. A support system is also necessary. Your support system should include people who are available to you any time of day or night when you are tempted to deviate from your diet program. You may also want to join a weight-loss support group so you have other people who are going through the same things you are to talk to when needed.
Complementary Methods
Hypnotherapy, according to Merck.com, has been used to help people successfully lose weight. Other options include acupuncture, aromatherapy, acupressure, relaxation and meditation. If you choose one of these methods, be sure you are working with a licensed and well-trained professional.
