Swimming
Swimming allows for a total body cardiovascular workout. It is easy on the joints of the body and the water causes less stress. According to U.S. Masters Swimming, swimming can be compared to running in helping people to lose weight. Using fins or a kickboard while swimming will help to tone the legs, while using hand paddles will help to tone the arms and upper body. According to Shape Fit, certain swimming exercises such as the breast stroke can burn up to 300 calories in 30 minutes.
Cycling
Cycling indoors or outdoors can help to lose weight quickly. During 30 minutes of exercise anywhere from 250 to 500 calories can be lost, according to Shape Fit. If riding outdoors on a regular bicycle, increasing the speed and going up and down hills can help with resistance and increase the amount of calories burned. While cycling on a stationary bike increasing the resistance and speed can help to increase the amount of calories burned.
