Red clover is a wild herb found in the meadows and prairies of Europe and Asia. It has also been brought over and naturalized in North America. It is most commonly used for grazing livestock but has several applications as an herbal remedy. Some of its medicinal benefits can be attributed to the presence of isoflavones, which are plant-derived chemicals that simulate the effects of estrogen in the body. Consuming red clover can provide several benefits to your body's health.
Osteoporosis
While the effects of red clover on menopause have not been determined through clinical studies, it does seem to have a notable impact on on the development of osteoporosis in your body. Significant bone loss associated with osteoporosis tends to occur when estrogen levels in the body drop. Since red clover can elevate the chemicals mimicking estrogen processes, the herb may be able to slow bone loss and improve bone mineral density, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Cardiovascular Health
The isoflavones in red clover have been associated with an increase in your body's HDL cholesterol--this is the "good" cholesterol that your heart and cardiovascular system needs to be healthy. The herb can also promote stronger arteries and prevent the development of heart disease. Red clover may have blood-thinning properties that can prevent the development of blood clots in your body, and blood flow may be improved with the herbal treatment.
Cancer Treatment
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, red clover may inhibit the development of new cancer cells in your body. The isoflavones found in this herb may also be able to kill cancer cells, and red clover may be effective in preventing some forms of cancer, including prostate and endometrial cancer. However, the estrogen-like properties of the isoflavones may also contribute to the development of certain cancers, just as the estrogen hormone does. Because of this, women with breast cancer are advised against using red clover until research is more conclusive.
