Top 10 Symptoms If You're Pregnant

Many women will experience signs and symptoms of pregnancy prior to a missed menstrual period. Symptoms may begin around the time a fertilized egg begins to implant into the uterine wall. This causes a rapid rise in both estrogen and progesterone, which are responsible for most first trimester symptoms. If you are experiencing pregnancy symptoms, make an appointment with your physician for the necessary testing and a prescription for prenatal vitamins.

Implantation Bleeding

You may experience implantation bleeding in early pregnancy. About six to 12 days after conception, the embryo implants itself into the uterine wall. This bleeding is usually lighter in duration, flow, and color than a regular menstrual period, states the American Pregnancy Association.

Breast Changes

The rapidly rising hormones of early pregnancy may lead to sore, tender breasts. Breasts may appear fuller and heavier than usual. The areolas may appear larger and darker in color.

Morning Sickness

Nausea and vomiting, also called morning sickness, are symptoms of pregnancy. Morning sickness may occur at any time throughout the day and can also include food aversions and cravings.

Headache

Early in pregnancy, increased blood circulation caused by hormonal changes may trigger frequent, mild headaches, reports the Mayo Clinic.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a common symptom of pregnancy in the first trimester. You may seem more tired than usual. Many women report a return of energy as they enter the second trimester.

Uterine Cramping

You may experience uterine cramping in your first trimester. It can also occur at the same time you notice implantation bleeding. This cramping is thought to occur as the uterus begins stretching to accommodate your baby.

Backache

According to the American Pregnancy Association, lower backaches may be a symptom that occurs early in pregnancy; however, it is common to experience a dull backache throughout an entire pregnancy.

Dizziness and Faintness

The dilation of blood vessels and low blood sugar may cause women to experience dizziness and faintness in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Frequent Urination

Frequent urination is a symptom of early pregnancy. As the uterus begins to expand, it places additional pressure on your bladder, giving you the sensation to void more frequently.

Delayed Menstrual Period

A delayed menstrual period is a symptom of pregnancy. If you are trying to become pregnant and have missed your menstrual period, it is time to take a home pregnancy test. If it is positive, contact your physician to schedule your first obstetric appointment.
