According to the report, "Anabolic Steroid Abuse" published in 2006 by the U.S. National Institute of Drug Abuse, adolescents as young as 8th graders have used steroids at least once in their life time. Though the intention was not drug abuse, adolescents used steroids to increase the muscle mass of the body, which remains the primary function of these synthetically produced male testosterone hormones. Despite this, steroids can affect your body system in many ways.

Gonad Effects

Testosterone is an essential hormone that keeps the prostate gland and reproductive organs functioning properly. Another hormone known as the gonadotrophins controls production of this hormone. This hormone releases into the brain by the pituitary gland. Steroid use undermines this entire system, resulting in the reduction of gonadotrophins. This leads to serious defects such as impotency and decreased sperm count.

Liver Damage

Liver acts as the filtration system of your body. Using enzymes, your liver breaks down everything that passes through it. Then food items and liquids pass into your bloodstream. Steroids that users consume orally increase the level of enzymes and damage the liver.

Effects on Cholesterol Level

Your body has two types of cholesterols--the High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) known as the "good cholesterol" and "bad cholesterol" respectively. Steroids lower the amount of HDL cholesterol and increase the LDL cholesterol. Balanced level of both cholesterols proves necessary for proper functioning of arteries. In case they become imbalanced by steroid usage, your arteries may get clogged and lead to further complications like hypertension or stroke.

Psychiatric Effects

According to Association Against Steroid Abuse, which runs the portal SteroidAbuse.com, alarming evidence exists that discusses how the use of steroids in athletes can result in aggression and irritation. Steroid usage can exacerbate your feelings of irritation, aggression, anxiety and other such disruptive emotions.

Kidney Problems

Steroid usage causes additional strain on your kidneys. Kidneys function as blood filtration and excretion systems of your body. The intake of steroids forces your kidneys to work overtime, which may damage them.

Withdrawal Syndrome

Though users are encouraged to stop steroid use, they need to become aware of the side effects associated with steroid withdrawal. Commonly observed effects include mood swings, aggression and depression. Once you discontinue usage of steroids, it may result in reduced muscle size and strength.

Acne Problem

Your acne development can increase by using of steroids. This depends on the steroid you use and the dosage. Sebaceous glands in the skin have an affinity for androgen which is produced from the testosterone. Increased activity of the sebaceous gland results in oily skin. This combines with bacteria and results in dead skin and pores.
