4 Ways to Dress For Hiking

1. Know the Area and Get the Basics

When planning a hiking trip, you should know something about the area you will hike in. You should do some research on the climate and weather of the places you will be hiking so that you will know what type of clothes to bring and wear. Regardless of the weather, there is some basic clothing that you will need for every hiking trip. A good pair of hiking shoes or boots is essential. Make sure they have good threading on the bottom so that you can easily climb on rocks, sticks and ground without slipping. Next, you will need a jacket. Even if the weather is warm, you never know when it will rain. A hat is another essential item. Many people wear baseball caps or toboggans. Hats will help protect your head from falling objects and weather elements.

2. Winter Hiking

When you are hiking in cold weather, you will want to dress to protect your body from the elements. You should have a waterproof jacket and boots, a fleece or flannel shirt, gloves, heavy socks, long underwear and a hiking hat such as a toboggan. You need to dress warm to prevent hypothermia and illness.

3. Summer Hiking

Hiking in warm weather is a little different from hiking in the cold weather. You will not need heavy clothing, but you will want to wear clothing that will protect you from the sun and bugs. You still need a jacket for rainy weather and hiking boots. In addition, you should wear a long sleeve shirt because it will protect your from bumps and scratches, the sun, the rain and bug bites. It may be hot, but the protection it provides is good. You will also need to wear shorts or long pants. If you are going to an area where there is a lot of shrubbery, you should wear long pants to protect your legs from bumps and scratches.

4. Other Essential Accessories and Gear

Other accessories that you might want to include in your hiking dress are sunglasses, watch, ski mask, earmuffs, scarf, extra T-shirt to wear under your long sleeve shirt, and a rain poncho. Most hiking and sporting goods stores sell all of the clothing and supplies that one may need on their next hiking trip.
