Basketball is a sport that requires all players to be in great condition in order to compete for a full game. When young people play basketball, coaches spend much of their time teaching the basic skills of the game such as dribbling, shooting and passing. However, players also have to be in excellent shape if they are going to compete and it is a coach's responsibility to make sure players get into good condition.

Baselines

This drill is done at all levels of the game and young people run baselines as well. Do this early in practice when energy levels are high. Have all players start at the baseline and run to the near free throw line and back, mid-court and back and the far free-throw line and back. Have players 11 years and older run to the far baseline and back to build endurance and speed.

Clothes Pin Drill

This drill helps a young player get in excellent condition, develop agility and also help a player learn to escape when hemmed in by defenders. Put two clothes pins on the backs of each player's jersey. On your whistle, each player tries to pull the clothes pins off other player's jerseys. At the same time, they try to avoid having their own removed. This drill goes on for five minutes and the most agile players can avoid having their clothes pins removed with agility and speed.

Speed Layup Drill

This drill builds endurance and help a player with his skills. Give the player the ball at the the right elbow just outside the free throw line. On your whistle, the player takes off and go in for the layup. He must head to the left elbow where a teammate will pass him the ball and then make a left layup. He keeps going in this manner -- alternating right-hand and left-hand layups -- for two minutes. Do this with all your players. The player who makes the most layups wins the drill.
