Homeopathic Treatment Options for Shingles

The common name of shingles represents a viral infection known as herpes zoster, which causes blister-like eruptions that are accompanied by intense pain. These breakouts commonly appear on the back, sides, and abdomen along the nerves, but may also appear on the face. Using homeopathic remedies for treatment can offer a safe and effective solution for pain relief and recovery from the virus. Remedies are chosen based on their specific indications towards individual symptoms. Seek medical attention if eruptions break out near the eyes.

Arsenicum Album

This homeopathic remedy is beneficial for most cases of shingles. According to Dr. Gary null, arsenicum is best taken in a potency of 30C twice daily for 2 to 3 days, taken immediately after symptoms appear. If after three days there is still a burning sensation in the affected areas, the remedy can be continued at a potency of 12C two to three times daily. Other indications for this remedy include feeling chilly, restless, anxious or exhausted during the period of fever. The burning pain may often be worse around midnight.

Apis Mellifica

When outbreaks are swollen and tender with burning and stinging pains accompanied by itching, apis may be needed. Warmth tends to aggravate symptoms, while cold applications can provide relief. Irritability and a sensitivity to touch may also be present in the person in need of this homeopathic remedy. Administer a 30C potency two to three times daily until symptoms improve.

Hypericum Perforatum

Hypericum is an excellent remedy for all types of nerve pain. Any time symptoms such as neuralgia, burning and tingling, or numbness occur along the course of the nerves, this homeopathic remedy is indicated. According to Dr. Gary Null, a 30C potency should be taken two to three times daily until symptoms abate.

Mezereum

When there is a need for this homeopathic remedy, burning is intense with bright red eruptions and intolerable itching. Local pain is exacerbated by heat and relieved with cold applications. The person in need of mezereum is generally chilly, however cool air is refreshing. Administer a 30C potency two to three times daily until symptoms improve.

Ranunculus Bulbosus

According to Dr. Ellen Feingold, ranunculus is the primary homeopathic remedy for treating pain and itchiness from shingles. Since the virus can be extremely painful for prolonged periods of time in elderly people, this remedy is beneficial due to its ability to shorten the illness. Physical contact, even from clothing, can aggravate symptoms. Eruptions may appear blue. Exposure to cold air may cause the person in need of this remedy to feel worse. Administer a 30C potency two to three times daily until symptoms improve.

Rhus Toxicodendron

When the shingles virus comes on with numerous small blisters that are red with intense itching, this homeopathic remedy may be indicated. Hot wet compresses or hot baths may provide relief. The person in need of rhus toxicodendron may be very restless, desiring to constantly be on the move. Administer a 30C potency two to three times daily until symptoms improve.
